Started studying Bushcraft in 1997 and holds over 10 relevant qualifications including walking group leader, camping group leader and forest school leader. An outdoor resume is available which chronicles his outdoor experience both in the UK and internationally. Alan originally trained to be an electrician in a Clydeside engineering company, then trained to become an architectural draughtsman. As a young man Alan emigrated to South Africa to work in architecture. He later moved to London and became an applications engineer for a computer aided design company. He became Head of Planning for one of the world’s largest banks and was responsible for the design of buildings around the world. Alan’s interest in sustainability led him to study climate change and he worked with an international environmental campaigning group before moving to the Wye Valley to study and practice Bushcraft.
Karen provides professional support in respect of the activities we offer which require skills in coaching and learning and development. Karen’s extensive experience in Project Management, Human Resources and Learning & Development was gained in her career with one of the Big 4 professional services firms and her expertise has continued to strengthen and develop since establishing Simple Effective Solutions Ltd in 2003. She is qualified in Neuro Linguistic Programming (Master Practitioner), Coaching (NLP Coach) and Emotional Intelligence. Working with Alan has enabled her to develop her knowledge of the natural world and how to use it directly as a powerful mechanism for learning and development.
